This is the Time

This is the time of year when folks begin to shift and fidget as if they were unsettled while sitting on a crude 2” x 6” wooden bench. The unsettledness is a part of the anxiety-filled waiting game for the “holidays” to get underway. There is a new beginning that is just around the corner. It comes into view at this time of year. But first…the company…the turkey…the football…the presents…the naps.

It may be the anticipation of the wonderful time we experience with family and friends, the warmth of kith and kin. It may be the decorations, the lights and tinsel that seem to spur an awakening of our spirits. But whatever it may be, the fact remains we find ourselves at this time of year looking forward to the beginning of something new. We look forward to the making of new memories. We are entranced by the possibilities that lie ahead. What will the new year bring? What exciting ventures will be had? What goals will be realized in the upcoming new year?

Newness has intrigued man from the very beginning. There is an attractiveness, an intrigue to that which is new. So we ponder, we plan, and we prepare for the newness to arrive…and we find ourselves shifting and fidgeting as if we were unsettled while sitting on a crude 2” x 6” wooden bench.

I wonder how many of us take our newness in Christ for granted? How many of us take our newness in Christ seriously? Peter Drucker said, “If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.” As we ponder, plan, and prepare, let’s commit ourselves to putting off the old self and putting on the new. Let’s remember who we are in Christ…new creatures.
