Building Each Other Up

Keith Harris

Encouragement is a powerful tool in the arsenal of every follower of Jesus. It holds a special significance, as we realize that Christians are called not only to love one another but also to encourage and uplift each other in our journey of faith. Among disciples of Jesus, encouragement strengthens the bonds as a community, allowing for a deepening of faith, love, respect, and unity to be present. It is no wonder that we see Jesus encouraging those among whom He ministered. He is the very picture of encouragement, as He gave His life for the sake of others, bringing encouragement to the lives of fallen humanity because of the hope we have in Him. As you read through the Bible, it is not difficult to see the lesson that can be gleaned from the moments of encouragement among God's people. Consider these thoughts...

The Power of Words

Proverbs 16:24 reminds us, "Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body." Our words have the power to build up or tear down, to encourage or discourage. By speaking words of encouragement, we not only lift the spirits of our brothers and sisters in Christ but also contribute to their spiritual growth and well-being. We would do well to recognize the power of words.

Bearing Each Other's Burdens

In Galatians 6:2, we are instructed to "bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Encouragement plays a vital role in bearing each other's burdens within the Christian community. Whether someone is facing trials, doubts, or struggles in their faith, our words of encouragement can provide comfort, strength, and hope in their time of need. We ought to have our eyes open to the opportunities before us to offer an encouraging word or act of kindness to someone in need.

Strengthening Faith

Hebrews 10:24-25 challenges us to "consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." Encouragement strengthens our faith and spurs us on to love and good works. By coming together as a community to uplift and support one another, we cultivate a culture of faith, perseverance, and resilience in the face of life's challenges. When we encourage one another, we offer a sense of hope through our words and actions that bolsters not only the faith of others but our own faith as well.

Leading by Example

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to be salt and light in the world, to be examples of Christ's love and grace to those around us. By offering words of encouragement to others, we demonstrate the transformative power of God's love in action. Our encouragement not only uplifts others but also serves as a powerful witness to the world of the life-changing power of the gospel. As we are called to follow the example of Jesus, we ought to be people of such character that others can follow our example and live the kind of life to which Jesus calls His followers. When it comes to being people who are encouragers, we ought to lead by example.

Building Each Other Up in Love

Encouragement is a cornerstone of the life of a follower of Jesus, essential for building each other up in love and faith. As disciples of Christ, we need to be intentional about offering words of encouragement to one another, bearing each other's burdens, and strengthening each other's faith. We need to be intentional in looking for opportunities to perform those acts of kindness that show others the love of God and provides encouragement. In doing so, we reflect the love of Christ and contribute to the growth and flourishing of the Body of Christ as a whole.
