Following the death of Amnon, Absalom’s brother, Absalom fled to his grandfather’s kingdom in Geshur where he remained for some 3 years. David longed to have Absalom back in Jerusalem, but Absalom would not return. Finally, after receiving a request from David to return, Absalom made his way back. When Absalom returned, he began plotting to take the throne away from David. He began gaining favor with the people and built up an army to overthrow his father. When the time was right, Absalom launched his coup and David was forced to flee Jerusalem…running into the wilderness. It was at this point in the life of David that he penned the words recorded for us in Psalm 3.
“O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, there is no salvation for him in God. But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God! Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people!” (Psalm 3:1-8)
David acknowledged the source of true salvation. When we think of God’s amazing love and care for His creation, we cannot help but think about the gift of salvation. It is only found in Jesus Christ. Following His crucifixion and burial, Jesus rose from the grave, conquering death and forever assuring humanity that resurrection is available for all those who are faithful to the will of God. Arise, O Lord!
